Apple Intelligence: A Closer Look at Apple’s AI Breakthrough

Uzone.id – Apple made a big announcement at WWDC 2024 months ago to announce their new AI technology. It might seem a bit late, considering Android phones and Windows PCs already have powerful AI features. But Apple’s AI, called Apple Intelligence, is finally here and it’s expected to be part of the iPhone 16 Series. Apple also revealed new products for the Apple Watch, AirPods, and possibly new Macs.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is a platform designed to enhance existing features by utilizing generative AI to make things better, just like Google Gemini does on Android phones and computers. Apple Intelligence is trained to understand different things, from text and images to videos and music.

One cool feature is Writing Tools, which uses large language models (LLMs) to help you with writing. It can summarize long texts, fix mistakes, and even write sentences based on what you give it.

You can also get creative with Apple Intelligence. There’s a feature called Image Playground where you can make your own visual content or custom emojis called Genmoji. You can use these in Messages, Keynote, or share them on social media.

Apple Intelligence even makes Siri smarter. It can work with ChatGPT to understand different things on your screen and do what you ask it to.

And how does it work?

Apple is taking a different approach to training its AI. Instead of using general-purpose AI models like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, Apple is creating its own models specifically for tasks like writing emails. This means these models can be smaller and run directly on your device, saving you computing power.

But Apple also knows that some tasks are too complex for your device to handle alone. That’s where their new Private Cloud Compute service comes in. It’s like a powerful computer in the cloud that helps Apple Intelligence with tough tasks. The best part? You won’t even notice the difference – whether something happens on your device or in the cloud,it’s all seamless.

One thing to note is that Apple Intelligence will be working with ChatGPT. This means Siri will be even smarter and better at understanding and completing your requests.

Apple said that Siri can still be used for free even though it is connected to ChatGPT. However, specifically for premium ChatGPT users, several exclusive features can also be used.

However, the integration of ChatGPT with Siri has been questioned by many parties, including Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). It is surprising why a company like Apple can’t create its own AI model and instead entrusts user security and privacy to OpenAI.

Even so, Apple ensures that ChatGPT will work if the user is permitted to do so. Users also still have full control over the use of ChatGPT, including the guarantee that data shared with OpenAI will not be stored on the server.

What devices get Apple Intelligence?

This smart feature from Apple will be present in the iOS 18.1 update, not iOS 18 which will be released this September. The reason is, that Apple Intelligence is not yet fully mature, although it can be tested by developers in the OS Developer Beta version.

The good news (or bad for some users) is, that not all devices can get Apple Intelligence. Here is a list of devices that can use it:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (A17 Pro)
  • iPhone 15 Pro (A17 Pro)
  • iPad Pro (M1 and later)
  • iPad Air (M1 and later)
  • MacBook Air (M1 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (M1 and later)
  • iMac (M1 and later)
  • Mac Mini (M1 and later)
  • Mac Studio (M1 Max and later)
  • Mac Pro (M2 Ultra)

Interestingly, only the Pro versions of the iPhone 15 will have access due to limitations in the standard model’s chipset. However, it’s safe to assume that the entire iPhone 16 lineup will support Apple Intelligence upon its release.
