Meet the Huawei Mate XT: A New Era of Foldable Phones with Dual Hinges

Uzone.id – After Apple announced the iPhone 16 Series, Huawei ‘fought back’ by launching the world’s first foldable smartphone with a double-fold design, the Huawei Mate XT. This foldable phone not only has one hinge in the middle of the screen but two hinges, with a fully extended screen reaching 10.2 inches.

Being the first in the world, Huawei managed to design the Mate XT with a thin (even very slim) profile. It has three stacked screens, and the phone’s thickness is only 3.6 mm when opened, with a total weight of 298 grams.

Technically, this phone does not have three separate screens but rather one flexible LTPO OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. When the screen is fully opened to 10.2 inches, its aspect ratio reaches 16:11 with a resolution of 3,184 x 2,232 pixels.

If only two parts of the screen are opened, its size becomes 7.9 inches. And when using it in ‘mainstream phone’ mode, the screen size is only 6.4 inches, which is still comfortable to hold with one hand. The resolution of each configuration is 2,232 x 2,048 pixels and 2,232 x 1,008 pixels. The screen quality is guaranteed to provide an eyegasm, especially since the screen-to-body ratio is only 92 percent, making it bezel-less.

So, how does the hinge work? It is certainly more complicated than other foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 or Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Huawei uses a hinge that allows the device to fold inward and outward, thanks to two tracks and moving components to ensure a gapless fold on the screen. This hinge is made from composite lamination with non-Newtonian fluid components that add durability.

There are several usage modes for the Huawei Mate XT, similar to a laptop. For the 6.4-inch screen mode, this phone is ideal for daily tasks, while the 7.9-inch screen mode is suitable for browsing or reading, and the 10.2-inch mode is best for detailed work.

On the back, the Huawei Mate XT is made very luxuriously. Its camera design reminds us of the Huawei Mate X5. The camera composition is sophisticated, combining a 50 MP sensor as the main camera supporting phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and optical image stabilization (OIS). Then there is a 12 MP telephoto camera with 5.5x optical zoom capability, a 12 MP ultrawide camera, and a laser autofocus module. Meanwhile, at the front, there is an 8 MP selfie camera placed in a punch hole.

As for the chipset, Huawei is a bit shy about mentioning its type, so it is not yet known whether this device also supports cloud-based or on-device artificial intelligence (AI) like most flagship phones. What is clear is that this phone comes with 16 GB of RAM, equipped with an AI assistant named Xiaoyi, also known as Ceila, with enhanced features. For AI features, there are several, including voice to text, automatic split screen, document translation, and photo editing features.

These features are provided through the HarmonyOS 4.2 operating system, an Android Open Source Project (AOSP)-based system without Google services. Supporting its large screen, the Huawei Mate XT is powered by a 5,600 mAh battery that supports 66W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse charging via wireless and 5W via cable.
