The expansion of the virtual world and the internet, especially after the early 2020s, has been driven by technological advances and social changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. During this period, the term Metaverse became a hot topic, both among technology enthusiasts and the general public.

In simple terms, the Metaverse can be described as a combination of the virtual and real worlds. Where people can interact, work, play, and socialize through digital avatars. It is not merely about playing games or using social media. But rather about creating a parallel world that is persistent and continuously evolving.

For Meta, the Metaverse is a connected virtual space where people can gather, socialize, work, and play. This cloud-based environment can be accessed using virtual reality (VR) headsets and projected into the real world. More simply, Meta describes it as a collection of virtual spaces that allow people to create and explore together. Even if they are not physically in the same location.

Meanwhile, Microsoft defines the Metaverse as a persistent digital world connected to various aspects of the physical world. Including people, places, and things. Microsoft sees the Metaverse as “a new medium and type of application” as revolutionary as the internet was in the 1990s.

Challenges Facing the Metaverse

Although the Metaverse sounds promising, the reality is not that simple. To truly experience this virtual world, users need special tools—namely Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies.

These tools function as bridges that connect us to other people, places, and objects in the virtual world, even if we are not in the same location.

The problem is that VR and AR technologies currently still face many limitations. They are very expensive, making them inaccessible to everyone. Additionally, many people feel uncomfortable when using them, and a large number of people still don’t even know what VR or AR is.

This presents a major challenge for technology companies. They not only have to develop the Metaverse itself but also convince the market to purchase and use VR/AR devices. Until now, there has been no easy and practical way to access the Metaverse without additional equipment. Which slows its development.

The Future of the Metaverse

The future of the Metaverse appears highly promising, at least in terms of market potential. The concept of an interconnected virtual world is no longer just a futuristic idea. But an ecosystem being prepared to become part of everyday life.

The projected to transform how people work, learn, shop, and socialize. Large companies across various sectors have even started racing to secure their positions in this new landscape.

However, this great potential also comes with skepticism. Not everyone is optimistic about the development of the Metaverse. One notable criticism came from Apple CEO Tim Cook, who expressed doubt about its future, especially regarding public acceptance.

According to him, the Metaverse concept is still too abstract, with unclear tangible benefits for everyday users. In addition, several investors have urged Meta to scale back its grand ambitions. The Metaverse project is considered to consume too many resources without clear results.

Such criticism has grown stronger as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have not yet been fully integrated into daily life, compounded by technological, regulatory, and privacy challenges.

Meanwhile, major tech companies continue to invest, hoping to become pioneers in this emerging digital ecosystem.
